Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine to the left or right, resulting in a “C” or “S” shape. Scoliosis usually occurs during adolescence and is called “adolescent primary scoliosis”. Other conditions that can cause scoliosis include congenital spinal abnormalities and neuromuscular disorders.
There are many causes of scoliosis, including congenital spinal deformities (present at birth, inherited or caused by the environment), genetic disorders, neuromuscular problems, and limb inequalities. Other causes of scoliosis include cerebral palsy, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy and tumors. However, most cases of scoliosis have no known cause.
Scoliosis is most accurately classified by cause. It can be divided into the following types:
Idiopathic scoliosis: the most common type of scoliosis, accounting for about 75% to 80%, the cause of occurrence is unclear, so it is called idiopathic.
According to the age of onset, it is divided into:
· Infantile type (0-3 years old);
· Children (4~10 years old);
· Teenagers (11-18 years old);
· Adult type (> 18 years old);
Due to the rapid bone development in adolescence, the deformity is more obvious, so the disease occurs in the adolescent period.
Congenital scoliosis:
Due to fetal skeletal dysplasia. It can be divided into three categories: poor segmentation, formation disorder and mixed type.
Neuromuscular scoliosis:
As a result of muscle-nerve diseases (muscle strength imbalance), the most common are scoliosis caused by poliomyelitis sequelae, brain spastic paralysis disease. If this type of scoliosis is given upward traction, the spine is easy to straighten, so the operation is good.
Neurofibromatosis with scoliosis:
Neurofibromatosis with scoliosis is a special type, which is often caused by the compression and destruction of surrounding tissues by the growth of neurofibromatosis. There are often coffee spots on the skin of the patient, the deformity is more common in the thoracic vertebra, the involved segments are few, but the deformity is serious, and the treatment is difficult.
Laminae with scoliosis:
Laminae cleft combined with scoliosis is a special type, caused by congenital laminae cleft, such patients often have multiple laminae missing or large fissure, some of which are combined with encephalomeningocele. Often accompanied by skin hair hyperplasia, lipoma, hemangioma.
Degenerative scoliosis:
Degenerative scoliosis is more common in the elderly and originates in the spine. It is a scoliosis based on severe degenerative changes in the intervertebral disc and small joints and decreased stability between the vertebrae.
Scoliosis will not only affect the appearance of the body, but also lead to back pain, nerve damage, dyspepsia or limb sensory disorders if it continues to progress, as well as dyspepsia and lack of appetite due to the impact of gastrointestinal function. If children have thoracic scoliosis, the chest will be squeezed and distorted, the chest will become smaller, and the cardiopulmonary function will be affected. Some children begin to pant without vigorous activities, and more serious cases can even affect life expectancy.
